Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Is bloating normal?

Yes, it's normal. There are many gut health reasons possibly behind bloating, but the good news is that it shouldn't continue past the first stage of the Reset. Some simple remedies include dandelion root, chamomile/ginger tea, morning tonics, apple cider vinegar, and water.

[_/su_spoiler]
What do I do when I get hungry?

Eat! It's totally okay to eat more when you're hungry, but try to eat slowly so your body can signal when you are full. You don't need to worry about overeating on the raw food diet, because fiber, nutrients, and water will fill you up.

[_/su_spoiler]
How do I relieve my headache?

There are two possible reasons for your cleanse-related headache: withdrawal from caffeine, and toxins being released into the bloodstream. If it's caffeine-related, the only remedy is consuming more caffeine; unfortunately, this will only disrupt the Reset, so we recommend weaning yourself off caffeine before beginning the 21 days.

If you are jumping right into the Reset with out weaning yourself off caffeine, then a detoxing headache will be totally normal during the first stages. The best remedy is drinking plenty of water to flush the junk out of your blood stream. You can also try drinking ginger tea, putting cayenne in your water, or getting a head massage.

[_/su_spoiler]
I am having diarrhea and constipation. What do I do?

A diet change can affect bowel moments, so diarrhea and constipation are completely normal. To alleviate constipation, stay hydrated, eat lots of fiber (dates, celery, raisins, chia seeds, avocados), and move; exercise and yoga are especially helpful, as they will stimulate the systems in your body that expel waste. Diarrhea may actually be a good sign, as it signals that your body is trying to dispel all the toxins it's been hiding away. Drink water with a little sea salt and lemon to maintain your electrolytes.

[_/su_spoiler]
Can I skip some meals?

Yes you can. Switching around meals and remaking recipes will not hurt the Reset in any way. We do suggest opening your mind and palette to the variety of raw food possibilities, but this is by no means a strict diet plan.

[_/su_spoiler]
What times of the day should I eat certain meals?

Our only suggestion with timing your meals is having your smoothie in the morning; this will kick the day off with plenty of nutrients and give your body a meal that's delicious and easy to digest.

[_/su_spoiler]
Is the meal plan made for one person?

Yes it is. If a second person joins, you will need to double the recipes.

[_/su_spoiler]
Can I add ingredients not in the Reset?

Yes and no. No if you want to substitute bacon for cabbage, but yes if it's other veggies, greens, or nuts. We do suggest trying to stick to the suggested ingredients so that you enjoy the full cleansing results, but the substitution page covers a variety of ingredients and our suggested alternatives. That being said, there are some ingredients we strongly encourage keeping in your Reset, including coconut oil, beets, cilantro, miso, and leafy greens. We suggest using coconut oil as your main oil.

[_/su_spoiler]
Can I substitute agave for honey or stevia?

When it comes to sweeteners, honey and stevia are the healthiest available. As new research emerges, it  may reveal different and even better options, but for now feel free to switch between these possibilities based on your personal preferences.

[_/su_spoiler]
Can I put protein powder in my smoothie?

Feel free to add protein powder as long as it's a raw, vegan, plant-based protein without any added sweeteners or additives. Unprocessed and unheated rice, pea, and hemp protein are great choices. It's worth noting that this Reset was designed to offer you all the protein you need, but you're welcome to add more as you see fit.

[_/su_spoiler]
I love chocolate. Can I add raw cacao powder to my smoothie?

While cacao is not exactly detox-friendly, it's not terrible either. Try to avoid it when possible, but sneaking some into your morning smoothie isn't the end of the world.

[_/su_spoiler]
Can I exercise or work out during the Reset?

Yes! Moving during a Reset is a great way to speed up the process. You may need to ease up on your usual workout and rest more, and we recommend talking to your doctor or health professional in advance depending on your health and regular exercise routine.

[_/su_spoiler]
I am not losing weight. Is there something wrong?

First off, there's more to a Reset than weight loss, so if you're following the Reset, nothing is wrong. Weight loss differs for everyone, and it depends on a variety of factors. If you're particularly invested in losing weight, talk to your doctor to better understand how weight loss works and what you need to accomplish it. Some weight loss suggestions include:

  1. Lower high fat (nuts and oils) intake after 4pm.
  2. Exercise for one to five minutes before and after you eat.
  3. Drink water with a little cayenne and lemon.
  4. Eliminate stress and try to accept situations you can't change; stress releases many chemicals in the body that retain weight.
  5. Extend the Reset for another one to three weeks. This Reset gives you everything you need to stay healthy for years to come, so adding in a few more weeks will continue contributing to weight loss.
[_/su_spoiler]
Can I do a Reset during pregnancy or while I'm nursing?

These aren't ideal times to start a cleanse. We suggest sticking to a pregnancy or nursing meal plan that gives your baby everything it needs to grow strong and healthy.

[_/su_spoiler]
When should I not do a cleanse?

We recommend avoiding a Reset if you meet any of the following criteria:

  1. You are under 16 years of age
  2. You have advanced cancer
  3. You are underweight
  4. You have an eating disorder
  5. You have liver or kidney disease

Although raw food resets have helped eliminate many severe health issues, we recommend consulting your doctor before starting this process.

[_/su_spoiler]
What if I don't finish the Reset or I get off track?

This is an interesting topic to explore. We are conditioned to follow a do-or-die, finish-or-quit mentality, but if you step away from that mindset, you'll look in the mirror and see an amazing person who took action towards a healthier life. Completing a week of smoothies, purchasing healthier options, or just trying one of the Reset meals is a fantastic first step. We hope you can see yourself in that light and love yourself for it.

[_/su_spoiler]
What if I don't have someone to do the Reset with?

More then 50% of those who embark on this Reset will do so on their own, but that doesn't mean you're alone. There are many ways to find groups that can support, inspire, relate to, and motivate you during and after the Reset. You can join our private Facebook group and reach out for advice or support, and you're always welcome to send us a message. You can also get involved with a social group in your area or start one of your own with meetup.com.

[_/su_spoiler]
Can I drink caffeinated tea or coffee?

Before we dive into coffee and tea we will explain what caffeine does to your body and how it will affect your Reset.

CAFFEINE 101: Certain teas and coffee have high caffeine content. Caffeine is a substance that is metabolized by our liver through a process that includes oxidation: this means that our liver must safely package and remove caffeine’s compounds from our bodies. As we all know, caffeine is a stimulant which will interfere with your natural sleep and wake cycle, making it difficult to know what your body needs. Caffeine is also is linked to increasing the amount of stress hormones your body releases, ultimately taxing your system. It also interferes with digestion, one of the primary bodily systems we are utilize to help in this Reset.

As you can see, ingesting caffeine will give your body more work to do and can therefore hinder or lessen the overall effectiveness of the Reset.

On top of this, caffeine is a majorly addictive substance from which we aim to free your body and mind. It’s time to regain control of your life!

Coffee

The straight answer for coffee is it will negatively impact on your Reset. Going decaf will also hurt your Reset because of the chemicals and processing used to decaffeinated the coffee.

If you anticipate a withdrawal from coffee, we suggest to heading up to the "Quick Start” section called “Cleansing Reactions or Withdrawals." We also suggest to give yourself a week prior to the cleanse to slowly wean yourself off coffee.

Tea

The research behind teas is pretty interesting. All forms of dried, store-bought teas have had heat applied to the leaves at some point to help control oxidation, which prevents the herbs from browning. Some of the most beneficial elements in tea are extracted by heat during the process. Also, teas are usually not high quality and often include bleach and outdated herbs. Unless you really get down to the source and pick the leaves yourself, tea won’t have the medicinal and nutritious value that it should. When you make tea, you boil out the nutrition and healthy enzymes.

Don’t get us wrong: tea is amazing and its benefits endless, which is why it’s been in ancient medicines for centuries.  The key is finding tea in its purist form.

For some, a nice cup of  chamomile before bed will be extremely important to finishing this Reset. If that is you, then please enjoy. It’s not a big deal because it won’t trigger your appetite, and the content inside many teas will not affect the cleansing experience. We do suggest avoiding caffeinated teas for the reasons described above.

Teas to avoid during the Reset:

  • Iced
  • Green
  • Black
  • English
  • Yerba Mate
  • White
  • Oolong
  • Jasmine
  • Decaffeinated teas (These teas go through an intense heating and/or chemical process to be decaffeinate)

Teas that are okay to drink during the cleanse (herbal and flower teas):

  • Chamomile
  • Dandylion
  • Nettles
  • Calendula
  • Mint
  • Fruit (such as raspberry)

If you’re looking for the healthiest tea possible, buy some organic herbs or flowers, make a cold brew, keep it in the fridge, and warm it up when ready.

Cold brews entail collecting the herbs you want and refrigerating them for four or five hours. This makes for nice, flavored water, nutrition still included. You can then warm it up and enjoy the raw health benefits the tea has to offer.

[_/su_spoiler]
Is it bad if I drink coffee and caffeinated tea after the Reset?

Caffeine is a hotly debated subject.

On the unhealthy side, caffeine can be addictive and in large amounts increase calcium loss from the body, worsen underlying tremors, cause anxiety, insomnia, and a rapid heart rate, and increase insulin levels that could lead to weight gain.

On the healthy side, moderate consumption has correlated with a lower risk of certain cancers, lessened migraine symptoms, improved cardiovascular exercise performance, and increased mood.

If you opt for caffeine, we suggest drinking in moderation and learning more about yourself by trying other options besides caffeine, such as an energizing smoothie, herbal/flower tea, yoga, or exercise to increase energy.[_/su_spoiler][_/su_accordion]

Describe your current “diet” or eating habit: I try to eat a plant-based diet most of the time, but while working on my graduate degree over the last couple of years, I started eating more convenience foods and junk vegan food. Health challenges and food struggles: I struggle with making bad choices for convenience sake. I also crave salty foods and rich comfort foods a lot.

Why are you joining the 21 Day Reset?: I hope to get some great raw food recipes, learn how to prepare raw food, and gain the energy and health that comes along with eating raw food. I would like to incorporate what I learn into my lifestyle.

Mallory Legge-DiGiorgio

Renee Pipkins

Age: 56

Profession: Semi-retired professional

Introduction & Fun Facts: I am married with a German Shepherd dog (this is our 5th one together). I love trying new things (new foods, new challenges, new learning experiences) and in my previous life I was an engineer. I have survived a couple of layoffs and retraining. I love food and study about healthy foods all of the time (got lots of cookbooks). I also did the Rouxbe online “Forks Over Knives” cooking class. I have been slowly walking this journey for a long time and it is now time for me to implement this way of living in my life and stay the course regardless of what is going on around me. This is a perfect time to reset my life with this new year. One fun fact is that I retrained as a professional driver (18-wheeler) and drove with my husband a hot second, but enjoyed the experience. We found it challenging in that confined space so long and at that time we had 2 German Shepherds. (Two large adults and two large dogs is a lot in a small area).

Have you participated in a cleanse or detox?: Master Cleanse (lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne) – lost weight initially and bounced right back – not sustainable.

The Garden Diet which consist of a 21 day cleanse as you are introduced into a Raw diet. It was okay, I lost weight but found that I could not totally stick with it. It was my introduction to the raw lifestyle. I saw the difference very quickly, but find it challenging to stick with it. It gave me faith in eating raw/vegan as much as I can. (It’s a challenge with a husband who is a picky eater, doesn’t like to try new foods and one who feels that meat needs to be eaten with every meal and prefers to eat out rather than eat a home cooked meal because it is easy to grab something.) So I cave in and yield to temptation.

Describe your current “diet” or eating habit: As of January 2nd I went back to my Garden Diet (raw) to tide me over until the Reset. I have deviated 3 meals since the first of the year and physically paid for it because my system was pretty clean. These experiences really made me a believer. I suffered from congestion for the deviation and as of a yesterday developed a food allergy to my imitation crab claw that I thought wouldn’t be so bad.

Overall, not real structured. Breakfast is usually a smoothie and after that I am all over the place. I find that I do better when I can take time a prepare a meal. But it’s a challenge because my husband is a picky eater – enjoys some real basic foods, doesn’t like leftovers and is real quick to grab something to eat from a fast food restaurant. So I go along and fall off the wagon.

Health challenges and food struggles: My biggest health challenges are obesity, blood pressure, high cholesterol and a low functioning thyroid.

Sticking with a program regardless of what is going on around me – church function, social functions and restaurant eating. I am a plate cleaner and like volume, both habits keep the weight moving in an upward direction.

Why are you joining the 21 Day Reset?: I have had some success with this way of eating in the past and I hope to develop some good habits in preparing some good tasting raw dishes with easily available ingredients.

I hope to develop habits that will allow me to attain and sustain the weight that I am supposed to be. I also hope to bring my medical numbers down to healthy ranges and hopefully not have to take anything in the future. I want to make my food my medicine; it’s too expensive the other way around.

Introduction & Fun Facts: I am a person with many interests and hobbies (music, sports, art, IT…) but especially the ability of food to heal your body. I was able to use enzyme therapy to help heal most of the eczema I developed on my hands these past couple years (going 80% raw), and am hoping to learn how to go 100% raw with this program to heal other things. I recently wrote a song about enzymes/raw food for my 1 year old son to teach him how great they are 🙂 I have a folk/rock/bluesy music website at http://www.andrealynnmusic.com !

Have you participated in a cleanse or detox?: No.

Describe your current “diet” or eating habit: 50-80% raw right now. Struggling to find quick and easy recipes that taste good. I loved all the books by Victoria Boutenko (green smoothie books) but have not enjoyed the recipes – besides the green smoothie recipes.

Health challenges and food struggles: I miss wheat and dairy. I love them, but I don’t think they agree with me very well. Wanting to find a good vegan/raw cheese. I also want to find some delicious, quick and easy (“go to”) recipes. I hardly have any time to make meals with a 1 year old.

Why are you joining the 21 Day Reset?: I would like all (100%) of my eczema to go away, would like improved blood sugars (I am a type 1 diabetic), and some ideas for delicious, quick, and easy meals.

Introduction & Fun Facts: I’ve been interested in health all my life, and first tried to implement a raw vegan diet nearly 15 years ago, but I’ve never managed to be completely successful with it. However, I recently quit my uber-stressful job in state government, primarily so I could focus on improving my health. Since quitting the job, I’ve managed to very successfully implement working out in my life (280 workouts during 2016 — I’ve been tracking!), but the food part is still eluding me. So, reset, here I come!

Have you participated in a cleanse or detox?: Yes. Using the 7-day detox supplement from Arbonne and eating a mostly healthy diet is as close as I’ve come to actually completing a cleanse. I’ve also tried raw foods and juice cleanses, but so far I’ve only made it a day or two tops on those.

Describe your current “diet” or eating habit: Some days I eat very healthy, primarily vegan. Other days (mostly when I’m really tired — I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome), my husband (who has no kitchen skills whatsoever) heads to a local fast food joint. I appreciate being fed when I’m hungry and tired, but it’s clearly not helping me feel better!

Health challenges and food struggles: Biggest struggle is planning and prep, especially when I’m really fatigued. Biggest cravings downfall is dairy, especially iced chai tea, chocolate pudding, and Hagen Das Butter Pecan ice cream. I especially crave that iced chai, and have yet to discover a worthwhile vegan alternative. Suggestions are welcome!

Why are you joining the 21 Day Reset?: I need a major kick in the butt. I’m looking to gain energy, reduce pain, and kick my fibromyalgia pain meds to the curb. Losing a bit of fat would be good, too, but isn’t my primary motivation.

Hi Everyone! I just got back from grocery shopping for week 1. Just wondering who else is planning on starting tomorrow?
I had all but one of the smoothie week smoothies and they were so delicious. Super excited to start the reset!

Christine
Christine

Susan, I’m starting tomorrow, too! I’ve never done anything like this, so I’m excited and a little bit nervous. The smoothies made me feel better about it, though, because they are all really yummy. I really hope to lose a few pounds, but if I could just feel better overall and wake up with more energy and the end of this, I’d be so happy!

Holly Barton
Holly Barton

Thanks for this! I have been really struggling with feeling tired, unmotivated and sluggish. Not sure if it is the raw food or the excitement, but just starting the reset this morning already gave me a boost

What kind of miso did you get? I see red, white and chickpea. Does it matter?

Christine
Christine

I got the chickpea miso. I don’t think it matters too much, just whatever you can find!

LarisaSparrowhawk
LarisaSparrowhawk

I used to work in Japanese restaurants. The flavors are very different. Miso soup is made from mellow white, which is also neutral enough for various salad dressings. Chickpea is also good. Red, brown and Hatcho will be too strong

Suzy Henderson

Thank Larisa, I ended up getting Chickpea. I\’ve never had it before but it doesn\’t taste to bad and sounds really healthy.

LarisaSparrowhawk

My goals are to lose a few pounds, clear up some itchy skin the dermatologist can\’t figure out, and to hopefully feel more alert in the day – and less so at night. I did all of these a few years ago when I ate high raw ( I obviously slipped ) and feel pretty confident it can happen again.

LarisaSparrowhawk

Btw, I LOVE prepping smoothie bags and putting them in the freezer. I take one out in the morning, work out for half an hour, come back and blend it. It is the perfect temperature and slushiness, and it takes very little time. Then I rinse out the bag to use again.

Hannah Arbor
Hannah Arbor

great idea! I’m going to start reusing my bags, too.

Larisa
Larisa

I also tried wrapping the smoothie bag in a towel and putting it in the refrigerator the night before so I can fly out the door faster. It also seems to work well. The contents blend well, and still retain some slushiness.

Jesse Forest

Are you eating the chia morning snacks or just doing the smoothie in the morning? I have been doing the morning snack but I missed it the last 2 days and felt pretty good, the one tomorrow Is really good so I am going t I make it.

Hannah Arbor
Hannah Arbor

I have done both, but sometimes I actually just do the chia snack and that fills me up for the morning. Love having both options, but I don’t usually need to eat both.

Suzy Henderson

I am really hoping to feel better and sleep better by the end of this and of course lose some weight before the spring comes. I actually slept pretty good last night and woke up feeling better then usual.

Larisa
Larisa

Are you still noticing better sleep?

Larisa
Larisa

How’s everyone doing? I have lost exactly zero pounds, but my skin is looking better already. So although I’m only one week in, I am seeing benefits.

Hannah Arbor
Hannah Arbor

That’s wonderful! Thanks for sharing Larisa 🙂
I haven’t been weighing myself so I don’t know about weight yet, but I feel lighter. I’ve noticed the biggest change so far in my energy levels. When I wake up I am not dragging like I used to and my kids commented that I actually stayed awake for an entire movie the other night. I’m surprised how filling everything has been, I haven’t been hungry at all. What about everyone else?

Larisa
Larisa

I wish I had the willpower to stay off the scale, because it can be depressing. But I did move it to a very inconvenient place (the garage) at the beginning of smoothie week so I would leave it alone a few days! I will wait another week before I go out there half naked in the cold again to rewegh!

Larisa
Larisa

Is your family going raw with you?

Hannah Arbor
Hannah Arbor

No, ha, my family thinks I’m crazy! Okay, they don’t really think that. They have been really supportive actually. That’s a great idea to move the scale to the garage 🙂 love it! How are you doing so far?

Jesse Forest
Jesse Forest

i thought I would come chime in here. I am on week two and loving it, I have had this knee injury for two years now and this sounds pretty crazy but I haven’t had any problems with it for the past two days. I did it to feel better and have more energy, I had no clue my knee would feel better. I have had number two more then I would want but it’s all good.

Nina
Nina

Hi everyone,
Hope you all had a great first week! I really enjoyed it even though I couldn’t eat all of the suggested meals 🙂
I just went through the shopping list for week 2. I am having troubles finding caranberries that are not dried. What would be a good substitute for it?

Tyson Hale
Tyson Hale

Hi Nina, cranberries are a very unique berry but really you can use any berry. If you’re looking for the same tartness, pomegranates and huckleberries are similar. You can also try the frozen section of the store to see if they have frozen bags of cranberries, but really any berry will be great.
